How to measure for a built-in wine fridge

Two minutes with a tape measure. Measure the empty space, not the old fridge.

Width

Measure side to side at the front, the middle and the back. Use the smallest number.

Height

Measure from the floor to the underside of the countertop. If you've put in new tile or hardwood since the cabinets went in, the space is shorter than it used to be. Most under-counter wine fridges need about 34" to 35", and most have feet that adjust a little.

Depth

Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the cabinets beside the space. Then check where the outlet and any pipes are, since the plug sits behind the fridge.

Four things that stop a fridge from fitting

  1. The space it needs is bigger than the fridge. Makers list a space size, and some "24-inch" fridges need a little more than 24".
  2. It's a freestanding model. Many cheaper wine fridges let heat out the back or sides and aren't made to be boxed in by cabinets.
  3. The handle sticks out. Depth with the handle can be an inch or two more than the body. We only show it when the maker lists it.
  4. The door hits something. Check which side it opens on and how much room the open door needs.

Find a fridge that fits

Always check the maker's install guide for the fridge you pick before you buy.
